A cube LED display — also called a Magic Cube — is a multi-face rectangular LED volume: typically four vertical sides, optionally a top or bottom face, built from standard Block or Brick cabinets or custom COB headers. Buying one means five decisions in order: side length and aspect, face count (4 / 5 / 6), pixel pitch, SMD vs COB, and mounting method. This guide walks through each decision with project data from retail pillars, exhibition cubes, and column wraps across 55+ countries. Start with our Cube LED product page for specifications — then return here to build your quote request.

Cube LED display buying guide decision flowchart showing five decisions side length face count pixel pitch SMD vs COB and mounting method
Key Takeaways
  • A cube LED is not a cylinder wrap and not a floating ring — it is a rectangular multi-face volume with hard 90° corners. Need a round column? See Cylinder LED. Need a hollow ceiling halo? See Ring LED.
  • Five decisions, in order: (1) side length / cuboid aspect, (2) face count, (3) pixel pitch, (4) SMD vs COB, (5) mounting. Each decision constrains the next.
  • Standard 4-face cubes start from 0.5m side length using Block or Brick series cabinets. Rectangular cuboids and column wraps use the same corner-lock engineering.
  • Common pitches on Block/Brick: P1.25 / P1.56 / P1.9 / P2.5 / P2.6 / P3.9. COB headers can reach P1.2 with ~0.3mm seams for touch-safe tickers.
  • 4-face is the volume configuration. 5-face and 6-face usually need custom engineering and possible NRE — see 4 vs 5 vs 6 Face.
  • Indicative pricing: basic 4-sided cube from $1,800 EXW Shenzhen. Touch-safe COB typically costs 30–50% more than comparable SMD when both are specified for audience reach.
01 — Shape Clarification

Cube vs Cylinder vs Ring — Know Which Shape You Need

Search terms overlap, but these are three different products with different frames, corner engineering, and content mapping. Getting this wrong at specification stage wastes weeks.

Cube / Magic Cube
  • → Rectangular multi-face volume — hard 90° corners
  • → 4 / 5 / 6 faces; each face can run independent content
  • → Retail pillars, exhibition islands, gaming wraps, COB headers
  • → Cube LED product page →
Cylinder LED
  • → Vertical 360° wrap — curved surface, no hard corners
  • → Viewers walk around a round column
  • → Different bend radius and content canvas rules
  • → Cylinder LED product page →
Ring / Halo LED
  • → Flat hollow loop — pixels on the band only
  • → Ceiling atriums, DJ halos — not a freestanding volume
  • → Open centre; different rigging model
  • → Ring LED product page →

If your brief says “cube” but the render shows a round column wrap, you want cylinder. If it shows a hollow ceiling halo, you want ring. Browse the full creative lineup on the Creative LED hub.

02 — Size

Decision 1: Side Length and Shape Configuration

A cube LED is defined by its plan footprint and height — not a single diameter. Standard builds start at 0.5m side length using Block or Brick series cabinets locked at 90° corners. Larger footprints tile additional cabinets per face.

Configuration Geometry Typical Use
Square 4-face cube Equal plan sides · from 0.5m Exhibition islands, brand activations
Rectangular cuboid Unequal plan sides · same corner locks Retail counters, elongated showcases
Column wrap (4-sided pillar) Tall aspect · wraps existing structure Mall / telecom retail pillars
COB LED header / ticker Shallow depth · fine-pitch top band Bar tops, reception desks, tickers

Viewing-distance rule: closest approach should roughly match pixel pitch in metres (P2.5 ≈ 2.5m+). Floor-standing cubes in galleries often need finer pitch than elevated pillar wraps because visitors walk within arm’s reach.

Column Wrap Reference

Four-sided pillar programs reuse the same 90° corner engineering as freestanding cubes — cabinets lock to a CNC frame around an existing column. See our AT&T 4-sided LED pillar mass-production case for how DFM and identical corner kits scale across hundreds of retail units.

03 — Faces

Decision 2: How Many Faces?

Face count drives structure, content channels, weight, and cost more than any other single choice after size.

4-Face (Standard)
  • → Four vertical sides — open top/bottom or closed with non-LED panels
  • → Built from Block / Brick cabinets — fastest lead time
  • → Default for pillars, booths, and most retail cubes
5-Face
  • → Four sides + top (or bottom) LED face
  • → Usually custom frame engineering; possible NRE
  • → Overhead viewing in atriums / mezzanines
6-Face
  • → Fully wrapped volume — all six sides pixelated
  • → Highest content complexity and service access design
  • → Museum / science-centre immersive cubes

Do not specify 5- or 6-face unless someone will actually view the top or bottom. Full engineering comparison: 4 vs 5 vs 6 Face Cube LED.

04 — Pixel Pitch

Decision 3: Which Pixel Pitch?

Same rule as any LED surface: pixel pitch in mm ≈ minimum viewing distance in metres. On cubes, faces often sit at different distances from the audience — specify pitch for the closest face, not the average walk-past distance.

Pitch (Block/Brick) Min Viewing Distance Typical Cube Application
P1.25 1.25m+ Close-up retail / gaming wraps
P1.56 1.5m+ Flagship floors, museum cubes
P1.9 1.9m+ Exhibition booths, brand islands
P2.5 / P2.6 2.5–2.6m+ Mall pillars, atrium walk-past — most common
P3.9 3.9m+ Tall pillars viewed from distance

COB LED headers and tickers can reach P1.2 with seam gaps around ~0.3mm — useful when the top band is within arm’s reach. Do not over-specify fine pitch on elevated faces nobody approaches.

05 — Surface Technology

Decision 4: SMD or COB?

SMD (discrete LED packages on Block/Brick modules) is the volume path for elevated pillars and booths above audience reach. COB (chip-on-board, encapsulated surface) is the touch-safe path for floor-standing cubes, museum exhibits, and headers people lean on.

SMD (Block / Brick)
  • → Lower cost — basic 4-sided from $1,800
  • → Fast repair — module swap on cabinet faces
  • → Best for: elevated pillars, booth walls above reach
COB (Header / Touch Zones)
  • → Encapsulated surface — better impact resistance
  • → Typically 30–50% more than comparable touch-safe SMD options
  • → Best for: museum cubes, gaming wraps, bar / reception tickers

Full decision matrix: SMD vs COB for Cube LED Displays. For a close-range COB corner reference, see the casino gaming machine COB wrap case.

06 — Mounting

Decision 5: Which Mounting Method?

Confirm mounting before production — base plates, hanging points, and internal cable exits are fabricated to match. Changing after ship means rework.

Method Typical Use Notes
Floor-standing Exhibitions, museums, brand islands Base plate + cable floor exit; tip-over check
Column wrap (around structure) Mall / telecom retail pillars Survey column dimensions before CAD
Ceiling-suspended Atrium cubes, hanging brand volumes Primary structure anchors; 3× weight safety
Desk / header mount COB tickers, reception bars Shallow depth; touch-safe surface preferred

FAQ

A cube LED display — also called a Magic Cube — is a multi-face rectangular LED volume with hard 90° corners. Standard builds use four vertical faces from Block or Brick cabinets starting at 0.5m side length. Configurations include square 4-face cubes, rectangular cuboids, 4-sided column wraps, and COB LED headers or tickers.

In order: (1) side length and cuboid aspect, (2) face count — 4, 5, or 6, (3) pixel pitch for closest viewing distance, (4) SMD vs COB surface, (5) mounting method — floor, column wrap, ceiling, or header. Confirm mounting before production because base plates and hanging points are fabricated to match.

Common Block and Brick pitches are P1.25, P1.56, P1.9, P2.5, P2.6, and P3.9. Match pitch in millimetres to minimum viewing distance in metres on the closest face. COB headers and tickers can reach P1.2 with seam gaps around 0.3mm for close-up, touch-adjacent bands.

Four-face is the volume standard for retail pillars and exhibition islands. Five-face adds a top or bottom LED surface when mezzanines or cameras look down or up — usually custom engineering with possible NRE. Six-face wraps all sides for museum immersive volumes and typically requires custom chassis design and NRE.

Choose SMD Block or Brick for elevated pillars and booth walls out of audience reach — basic 4-sided cubes start from $1,800 EXW. Choose COB when hands can touch the face — museums, gaming wraps, bar headers. Touch-safe COB typically costs 30–50% more than comparable SMD options.

Basic 4-sided SMD cubes start from $1,800 EXW Shenzhen. Larger cuboids, finer pitch, COB surfaces, and 5- or 6-face custom builds are project-quoted and may include NRE. CAD mockups land within 72 hours; formal line-by-line quotes within 24 hours once configuration is locked.

Confirm shape versus cylinder or ring, side length and height, face count, pixel pitch, SMD or COB, mounting method and site structure, power and data path, and request a CAD mockup with corner locks, mounting points, and cable routing before the purchase order.
