A cylinder LED display is a 360° vertical column — flexible modules wrapped around a steel frame so content is visible from every approach angle. Buying one means five decisions in order: diameter and height, pixel pitch, column wrap vs can-shape, indoor vs outdoor IP65, and cylindrical content mapping. This guide walks through each decision with real project data, including the Absolutus Lisbon P1.5 GOB column (Ø1.53m × 3.2m). New to cylinders? - A cylinder LED is not a ring and not a circular disc — it is a vertical 360° column wrap. Ceiling halos → Ring LED. Solid round wall screens → Circular LED. Vertical pillars → this guide.
- Five decisions, in order: (1) diameter + height, (2) pixel pitch, (3) column wrap vs can-shape, (4) indoor vs outdoor IP65, (5) cylindrical content mapping. Each decision constrains the next.
- Minimum diameter is set by module size, not pitch: 240×120mm modules → Ø764mm; 320×160mm modules → Ø815mm. Columns below 764mm cannot use standard flexible modules without copper-trace risk.
- Pixel pitch range: P1.5–P4. Public-access fine pitch (P2.0 and below) should use GOB protection — as on Absolutus Lisbon P1.5 GOB.
- Indicative turnkey bands (modules): ~$1,800–$3,500+/m² for P1.2–P1.5; $800–$1,500/m² for P2.0–P2.5; $400–$800/m² for P3–P4, plus frame, processor, and freight. CAD mockup in 72h; line-item quote in 24h.
Cylinder vs Ring vs Circular — Know Which Shape You Need
Search terms overlap, but these are three different products with different frames and content workflows. Getting this wrong at specification stage wastes weeks.
- → Vertical 360° wrap around a column or freestanding totem
- → Viewers walk around the surface — not a ceiling halo
- → Flexible modules on a steel cylinder frame
- → Cylinder LED product page →
- → Flat horizontal loop — open centre, pixels on the band only
- → Ceiling-suspended atriums, DJ booths, retail frames
- → Different rigging, different band canvas
- → Ring LED product page →
- → Solid round disc — pixels fill the entire surface
- → Wall-mounted signage, full-image circular content
- → Flat plane, not a vertical column
- → Circular LED product page →
If your brief says “cylinder” but the render shows a hollow ceiling halo, you want ring. If it shows a solid flat disc on a wall, you want circular. For shape comparison across the creative cluster, read Ring vs Circular vs Cylinder LED and the Ring LED Buying Guide.
Decision 1: Diameter and Height
A cylinder has two size dimensions. Outer diameter sets viewing scale and module choice. Height sets total area (and cost) and how much of the column is covered.
Minimum diameter is a hard engineering limit from flexible module bend radius — not a marketing preference:
| Module Size | Min Outer Ø | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| 240×120mm flexible | 764mm | Smaller retail / lobby columns |
| 320×160mm flexible | 815mm | Mall atriums, taller wraps, most projects |
Measure existing pillar diameter at site (including cladding if present). If the finished wrap diameter must stay below 764mm, standard flexible modules are not the right path — request a feasibility drawing before budgeting. Full engineering explanation: Cylinder LED Minimum Diameter.
| Venue | Typical Ø | Typical Height |
|---|---|---|
| Retail flagship / boutique column | 0.8–1.5m | 2.0–3.5m |
| Hotel lobby / mall atrium pillar | 1.2–2.5m | 3.0–6.0m |
| Exhibition / brand totem (can-shape) | 0.9–1.8m | 2.5–4.5m |
| Outdoor plaza landmark | 1.5–3.0m+ | 4.0–10m+ |
Our Absolutus Lisbon column wrap used P1.5 GOB flexible modules at Ø1.53m × 3.2m height — well above the 764mm / 815mm minima. Steel frame bolted in under one hour; full magnetic module mounting under three hours. Use this as a mid-size retail benchmark when scoping diameter and height.
Decision 2: Which Pixel Pitch?
Rule of thumb is unchanged: pixel pitch in mm ≈ minimum viewing distance in metres. Cylinder products at DOIT VISION typically span P1.5–P4. Going finer than viewing distance requires is wasted budget — total pixel count on a full 360° surface climbs fast.
| Pitch | Min Viewing Distance | Typical Cylinder Application |
|---|---|---|
| P1.5 | 1.5m+ | Luxury retail / lobby — use GOB if public-access |
| P2.0–P2.5 | 2–2.5m+ | Mall atriums, exhibitions — most common band |
| P3–P4 | 3–4m+ | Outdoor plazas, long atrium sight lines |
GOB recommendation: For public-access fine pitch (P2.0 and below), specify GOB (glue-on-board) protection. Visitors lean on columns; unprotected fine-pitch LEDs take impact damage. Absolutus Lisbon ran P1.5 GOB for exactly this reason.
Flexible module technology and bend limits are covered on our Flexible LED hub — cylinder wraps use the same module families as curved walls.
Decision 3: Column Wrap or Can-Shape?
Same flexible modules and magnetic front-service. The difference is the steel frame geometry and whether an architectural pillar already exists.
- → Wraps an existing structural pillar
- → Diameter follows the column (+ frame clearance)
- → Ideal for: mall atriums, hotel lobbies, retail flagships
- → Site survey of pillar diameter and cladding is mandatory
- → Freestanding steel frame — beverage-can / brand totem form
- → Height and taper are custom; no existing pillar required
- → Ideal for: brand activations, exhibitions, plaza landmarks
- → Floor load and base fixing become the structural scope
Do not specify can-shape when a load-bearing pillar already exists in the right location — you pay for a freestanding frame nobody needs. Full comparison: Column Wrap vs Can-Shape Cylinder LED.
Decision 4: Indoor or Outdoor IP65?
Indoor cylinders use standard flexible modules with indoor brightness and IP rating. Outdoor cylinders need IP65-rated modules, higher brightness, and site-specific wind / structural calculations for freestanding or plaza columns.
| Environment | Module Spec | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor atrium / lobby / retail | Indoor flexible; GOB if fine pitch + public access | Most common cylinder projects |
| Semi-outdoor covered plaza | Confirm rain exposure — often IP65 | Do not assume “covered” = indoor |
| Outdoor plaza / landmark | IP65 modules + outdoor brightness | Wind load + foundation in scope |
Confirm environment before production. Module IP rating, power supply enclosures, and cable glands are specified to match — not field-upgradable from indoor to outdoor after shipment.
Decision 5: Cylindrical Content Mapping
You cannot simply stretch a 16:9 video around a cylinder — logos warp and vertical seams tear. Content needs cylindrical UV mapping matched to diameter, height, and pixel pitch.
- Canvas size = circumference (π × Ø) × height, in pixels at the chosen pitch.
- Processor: Novastar (or compatible) with a pre-mapped RCFG / calibration file for the exact configuration.
- Seam continuity: Receiving-card layout and module tiling must align so the 360° loop has no visible vertical jump.
DOIT VISION ships a pre-mapped RCFG file with every cylinder order so continuous 360° playback is ready before install day. Content designers need diameter, height, and pitch before producing assets — not after the screen arrives.

What Does a Cylinder LED Display Cost?
Cylinder pricing tracks Flexible LED turnkey bands by pitch, then adds steel frame, processor, and freight. Indicative ranges from our product FAQ (2026):
| Pitch Band | Indicative Turnkey (USD / m²) |
|---|---|
| P1.2–P1.5 | ~$1,800–$3,500+/m² |
| P2.0–P2.5 | $800–$1,500/m² |
| P3–P4 | $400–$800/m² |
Plus frame, processor, and freight. Area = circumference × height. Outdoor IP65, can-shape custom taper, and GOB fine pitch sit at the upper end of each band. Every quotation includes a line-by-line BOM. CAD visualisation in 72 hours; formal quote in 24 hours after diameter, height, and pitch are confirmed.
