Column wrap and can-shape cylinders use the same flexible LED modules and magnetic front-service. The difference is the steel frame: wrap follows an existing architectural pillar; can-shape is a freestanding totem with custom height and taper. Choosing wrong means either fighting a pillar that was never meant to be wrapped — or paying for a freestanding structure when a load-bearing column already sits in the right place. Part of our Cylinder LED Buying Guide cluster.
- Column wrap mounts a sectional steel frame around an existing pillar; diameter is constrained by the column (+ clearance).
- Can-shape is a freestanding steel totem — beverage-can or brand cylinder form — with custom height and optional taper. No existing pillar required.
- Both use 240×120 or 320×160 flexible modules; minimum outer diameter remains Ø764mm / Ø815mm depending on module size.
- Wrap projects fail most often on inaccurate pillar surveys (cladding, ovality, fire services). Can-shape projects fail on floor load and base fixing assumptions.
- Absolutus Lisbon was a column wrap — P1.5 GOB, Ø1.53m × 3.2m. Specs: /cylinder-led-screens/.
Shared Technology, Different Frames
Both form factors use the same flexible LED module families (P1.5–P4), magnetic front-service, and Novastar-compatible cylindrical mapping. What changes is the steel chassis:
- Column wrap frame: Split rings / sectional cages that bolt around an existing pillar. Modules magnet onto the outer face. The pillar carries primary structural load.
- Can-shape frame: Self-supporting cylinder (often with base plate or floor anchors). The frame is the structure. Modules magnet onto the outer face the same way.
If you are comparing creative shapes more broadly — ring halos, solid circular discs, cubes — start at the Creative LED hub and the Ring vs Circular vs Cylinder article. This page stays on wrap vs can-shape only.
Column Wrap: When It Wins
Specify column wrap when a load-bearing or architectural pillar already occupies the visual centre of the space — mall atrium, hotel lobby, retail flagship, airport concourse.
- → Reuses existing structure — no freestanding foundation
- → Natural sight lines: traffic already flows around the pillar
- → Frame ships in sections for container loading and site access
- → Faster install when pillar geometry is clean (see Absolutus timing)
- → Diameter locked to pillar + frame clearance — must clear Ø764 / Ø815 minima
- → Oval columns, fire risers, and cladding thickness must be surveyed
- → Access doors / service panels on the pillar need coordination
- → Height limited by usable clear column length
Reference: Absolutus Lisbon — P1.5 GOB column wrap, Ø1.53m × 3.2m. Product specs: Cylinder LED Screens.
Can-Shape: When It Wins
Specify can-shape when there is no usable pillar — or when brand geometry (beverage can, perfume bottle, custom taper) is the design brief. The freestanding steel frame becomes a brand totem.
- → Place anywhere on the floor plan (within load rules)
- → Custom height and taper independent of architecture
- → Ideal for exhibitions, pop-ups, plaza activations
- → Same module / GOB / IP65 options as wrap
- → Floor load, base plate, and fixing method are in scope
- → Outdoor can-shape needs wind calculation
- → Tip-over and public-access protection must be engineered
- → Frame cost is higher than a wrap cage of similar diameter
Module bend limits still apply: freestanding cans below Ø764mm (240×120) or Ø815mm (320×160) are not standard flexible builds. See minimum diameter guide.
Structural and Site Survey Differences
| Survey Item | Column Wrap | Can-Shape |
|---|---|---|
| Primary structure | Existing pillar | Floor / foundation |
| Critical measurement | Pillar Ø + cladding + ovality | Floor load capacity + anchor type |
| Services clash | Fire risers, access panels, sprinklers | Underfloor conduits, egress paths |
| Outdoor add-ons | IP65 modules; wind on tall wraps | IP65 + full wind / tip-over calc |
Installation sequence for wraps (frame bolt → magnetic modules → mapping) is covered in Cylinder LED Installation. Can-shape adds base plate setting and plumb check before module hang.
Cost and Lead-Time Impact
Module cost follows the same pitch bands as the product FAQ: ~$1,800–$3,500+/m² (P1.2–P1.5), $800–$1,500/m² (P2.0–P2.5), $400–$800/m² (P3–P4), plus frame, processor, and freight.
- Wrap frame: Sectional cage — typically lower steel cost than a freestanding can of the same diameter and height.
- Can-shape frame: Self-supporting structure + base — higher steel and engineering hours; custom taper adds tooling time.
- Lead time: Both get CAD in 72h and quote in 24h after diameter / height / pitch are locked. Custom taper can-shape may add frame fabrication days vs a standard wrap cage.
Do not compare wrap vs can-shape on module $/m² alone — the frame line on the BOM is where they diverge.
Decision Framework
| Scenario | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Mall atrium structural pillar | Column wrap |
| Hotel lobby centre column | Column wrap |
| Beverage brand activation (no pillar) | Can-shape |
| Exhibition booth centrepiece | Can-shape (portable base options) |
| Outdoor plaza landmark | Can-shape + IP65 + wind calc (or wrap if plaza column exists) |
| Pillar present but Ø below 764mm finished | Feasibility review first — see min diameter |
