SMD VS DIP VS COB LED Display,Which is Better?

by | May 11, 2024 | Blogs | 0 comments

Outdoor LED signs gas taken over the market like storm and is bringing new and better options to spread brand awareness increase reach to the consumers. More and more individuals and small to large businesses are looking for the best compatible LED display screens to use the features for their benefits.

LED technological advancement has eliminated all limitations from using traditional DIP screens with the invention of SMD and COB LED display screens. While there are many other variations in LED screens, the competition among SMD, DIP and COB is quite intense because all technologies offer incredible benefits with customer satisfaction and efficiency.

Factors to Consider for LED Display Screens

Indoor LED display
Indoor LED display

It’s not that easy to find an appropriate LED display supplier and led display, especially when the competition is too high and buyers have to go through a wide list of features, specifications and options to come up with an appropriate one. But, when it comes to getting a list of general factors to choose the right LED display screen, here are what experts used to mention:

  • Pixel pitch
  • Screen resolution
  • Size
  • Brightness level
  • Sound effects
  • Viewing experience
  • Smoothness and clarity
  • Power efficiency
  • Contrast level
  • Color uniformity

Over 65% people visit retail shops to check the clarity and viewing experience of various LED display screens. They are aware of the fact that these shops have one of all pieces in operation and so, they can make a comparison at the spot and place an order.

Though, the thing that matters is to figure out the purpose and extent of use- if someone is looking for an indoor display, then an SMD LED would be better but, if a buyer likes DIP, it can be chosen as well. Other than that, below is a brief comparison of the three alternatives to help buyers decide which one to go for:

DIP LED Display Screen

DIP display screens have been in existence since years now. Their strong and efficient technology has made them a preferable choice for marketing industries. DIP refers to Dual Inline Package that offers the same visual experience as SMD display. But, the thing that makes it different from SMD is separate LEDs present in the structure. It has blue, red and green LED dots as points on the screen that a human eye can easily see.

DIP LED

DIP LEDs used to give non-homogenous contrasting effects that reflect external light and always remain in relief no matter how much they work. Another thing that makes DIP technology a better option is the virtual pitch that enables display screens to generate a new LED, WHITE to accentuate definition and render the screen.

With that being said, DIP outdoor led screens are good for outdoor advertising because they do not go down below 7 pitch no matter what.

Why to have it?

Color consistency is one of the promising features of DIP display screens. Since they are waterproof, they are capable of giving high-quality images. Their virtual pixel technology or pixel sharing technology makes sure that users have incredible viewing experience with outstanding quality content.

Since DIPs are recommended for outdoor purpose, they used to have weather-resistant capability that saves them from UV rays and moisture. The best part of DIP LED display screens is their energy efficiency that enables them to work on low energy without compromising on brightness, which is 8000 nits or more.

SMD (Surface Mounted Device) LED Display Screen

SMD technology is completely opposite of DIP technology. It doesn’t use three colors of LEDs (red, blue and green); rather, it makes a single point of white or black color by grouping them. The resultant is either a dot or a square, where the dot has diameter of a few millimeters.

SMD LED

Unlike DIP screens, SMD LEDs are not visible separately and therefore, the gap between each pixel is almost unnoticeable. The best thing about SMD LED is that it has unmatched resolution, with a pixel pitch of 1.6 mm or more.

Another distinguishing factor of SMD LEDs is the number of diodes and contacts present in their structure. SMD LED chips usually have more than two contacts, which is significantly better and different than typical DIP LEDs). They can have maximum 3 diodes on one chip, where each diode will be having its own circuit. This circuit will have one anode and one cathode that will make 2, 4 or 6 contacts on an LED chip.

With this configuration, SMD chips show incredible versatility as there are blue, red and green diodes. With these colored diodes, any color can be created with significant output level adjustments. So, users are rest assured about getting clarity and smoothness in the images no matter what they are viewing and from where.

Why to have it?

SMD display screens pride themselves for offering incredible color consistency with better picture quality and screen resolution. The screen is capable of maintaining good color mixture because it has grouped LEDs for seamless blending.

SMD display screens offer an amazing viewing angle that any other light source cannot provide. Their lightweight makes it easy for users to carry them wherever they want. Also, they are quite easy to move and install, which makes it convenient for users who don’t want to fix them at one place.

SMD technology has turned out to be a good a reason to develop high definition outdoor devices but, when it comes to their usage, manufacturers recommend for indoor purpose.

COB LED Display Screen

Chip on Board or COB is a kind of LED display that has an integrated circuit wiring bonded to a printed circuit board having LED lamps. These lamps are present in the front while ICs at the back that complete a COB LED module. When these modules are joined together, they create an LED display.

SMD VS DIP VS COB LED Display,Which is Better? 1

COB display encapsulates the LED chip technology (upstream, display technology (downstream) and encapsulation technology (midstream). This enables COB LED screen to be widely used for a number of purposes.

Why to have it?

COB LED display doesn’t have diameter per single LED due to its micro size. This makes production process easy with less expenses. COB display screens pride themselves for being thermal-resistant with high-density packaging.

As compared to SMD and DIP, COB LED is easy to install. Its ultra slim PCB boards make light-weighted LEDs that are quite convenient to carry wherever buyers want. This type of display screen encapsulates the LED chips on the board that are solidified with the help of an epoxy resin glue. The best part of COB display is that it can dissipate heat with copper foil on the board.

Another important consideration is its anticorrosion, anti-static, waterproof, anti-oxidation, dustproof and damp proof capabilities that make this LED a significant purchase for a variety of purposes.

Which is Better?

Advantages of DIP and disadvantages of SMD

For DIP, each pixel consists of three individually colored (RGB) LED bulbs. Each bulb has two long legs. The long pins are inserted into the PCB pads, so there are few problems with cold soldering after through-hole soldering. SMD LED displays have short legs and the LEDs are mounted on the PCB pads, making them more susceptible to soldering problems than DIP.

Longer feet allow for better heat dissipation from the LED bulb. Better heat dissipation means a longer service life for the LED display. Therefore, in the long run, DIP LEDs are more durable than SMD LEDs.
The larger size of DIP LED lamps allows LED displays to show higher brightness. Usually normal brightness DIP LED display can reach 7,500nits, and high brightness can reach more than 10,000nits. Usually the brightness of outdoor SMD LED display is around 6,000nits.

Compared with the same specification SMD, DIP LED screen has lower power consumption. Usually the power consumption of DIP LED display is 1/3 lower than SMD display.

Compared with DIP display, SMD display has the following advantages:

SMDs are lighter in weight, have a wider viewing angle, clearer and truer color output to the desired color, and better color uniformity. They are more energy efficient than DIPs.

SMD chips offer better heat dissipation, high lumen output (high lumen flux) and longer overall life (low optical degradation) than their DIP LED predecessors.

SMDs have a more natural image look and feel on LED displays – with less pixelization.

The advantage of SMDs is that they can be easily manufactured through efficient mass production, which helps to reduce costs in the manufacturing process. This will obviously save on labor costs and LED displays will be able to be produced on a larger scale.

SMD Vs. SMD LED

Both COB and SMD LEDs are efficient, durable, and last long. If you need broad lighting, go with COB. For specific, focused light, choose SMD. We think carefully about which to use in each light to give you the best performance. Here is the comparison of COB and SMD LED technologies:

FeatureCOB LEDSMD LED
Size & DesignBigger, with many LED chips on one substrate. Efficient space use.Smaller, one LED chip on a circuit board. Offers design flexibility.
Light OutputWide beam, spreads light evenly. Great for large areas like workshops.Narrow beam, directs light to specific spots. Ideal for focused tasks.
Energy EfficiencyVery efficient, fewer components mean less failure and longer life.Efficient, but slightly less so than COB.
DurabilityMore durable, larger size and fewer parts mean less likely to break.Durable, but COB might last longer due to its design.
Best ForWide, even light spread. Perfect for general lighting in big spaces.Directional, focused light. Best for spotlighting or task lighting.
