Overview

How LED Sphere Displays Are Engineered

A sphere is not a round picture on a wall. The frame, the poles, and the pixel map are one drawing.

Science halls, atriums, and brand objects need a surface people walk around. An LED sphere display — also called a spherical LED screen or LED video ball — puts pixels on a globe, a hemisphere, or a dome. Content has to close at the seam and still read at the poles.

It is not a circular LED screen (a flat disc),not a ring (a hollow halo), and not a cube (flat faces at 90°). If the brief is a globe in theatrium, this is the page.

The product catalog lists five indoor models — SS-1.25 / SS-1.5 / SS-1.875 / SS-2 / SS-2.5(P1.25–P2.5) — each with its own standard diameter list (from Ø0.3 m on SS-1.25 up to Ø4 m on SS-2.5).Indoor builds typically run Ø0.3–5 m (larger on request). Outdoor spheres useP2.5–P5, about Ø1–6 m, IP65. Indoor catalog brightness is1,000 nits, refresh 3,840 Hz, control Mooncell. Prefer ≤ ~Ø2 m when you want the sphere to ship whole.

Hemisphere work splits into Outward Display (convex face to the room) and Inward Display (concave face toward the viewer). Those are different frames, not the same half-ball flipped. CAD follows within 72 hours of a complete inquiry.

Why a Small Sphere Costs More Than a Flat Wall

Buyers often ask why a 1.5 m ball at a mid pitch is priced far above the same square metres of flat cabinet. The answer is the bill of materials — not a markup story.

Engineering

Packing, Touch, Poles, Control, and Mount

These are the decisions that decide whether a sphere project lands — or stalls on site.

01 — Ship-whole vs kit

~Ø2 m Is the Packing Line

Below about 2 m diameter, a sphere can leave Shenzhen as one assembled unit (typical asks: 1.0 / 1.5 / 1.8 m). Above that, crates must ship as a modular kit. On-site reassembly is where modules get cracked, corners misaligned, and schedules slip — and most venue techs are not trained for it. That is why many large-ball projects fail after they look fine on a render.

Soft rule: we still build >2 m when the brief needs it. Expect extra engineering support, a reassembly plan, and a higher damage risk budget.
02 — GOB (optional)

People Touch Spheres

A glowing ball in a lobby or museum is a magnet for hands. GOB (glue-on-board) puts a protective resin over the LEDs — not stock on every sphere, but strongly recommended when the public can reach the surface. Specify GOB at quote time; it is harder to add after the modules are built.

Integrator note: if the brief has a glass rail but guests still lean in, treat it as touch-prone.
03 — Poles and seams

Poles Are a Design Item

Slice-style PCB sets look simple and then fail at the poles. A segmented set can cover the poles and costs more PCB types. The seam and the poles belong in the drawing — not as a surprise on site. Flat 16:9 timelines stretched over a ball warp logos.

Integrator note: plan artwork against the spherical map we ship with Mooncell.
04 — Control

Mooncell, With a Map

Sphere and hemisphere forms use Mooncell only on this line. We ship the mapping file for the built diameter so the processor plays a closed image. Novastar, Colorlight, and Brompton are not specified on this form — do not write them into a sphere bid.

Lead time: standard builds ~25–30 days; custom R&D ~45–60 days after drawing lock.
Application Scenarios

Where a Sphere Earns the Rigging

Use it when the object has to read from several directions. A flat wall still wins if the audience sits in one seat.

01 — Museums
Science and Planetarium Halls

Science and Planetarium Halls

Earth, weather, and ocean datasets need a closed surface. Viewers stand in a circle. Pitch is chosen for the closest guest, not the brochure.

02 — Atriums
Data mapped onto a globe

Hanging Brand Globes

Lobby and hall hangs need a rated point, a cable path, and a service radius. Tell us ceiling height and point load before we draw the hanger.

03 — Immersive portal
Hemisphere – Inward Display

Hemisphere – Inward Display

Concave immersive portals for brand floors and exhibits. Guests stand at the bowl. Specify GOB when they can reach the face. Frame is not a flipped Outward dome.

Small Catalog Spheres on the Aging Rack

The brochure covers Ø0.3–4 m indoor (and larger). This photo is burn-in of small production spheres — proof the form is manufactured, not a one-off render.

Catalog Sizes Start Small — Then Scale by Pitch

Challenge

Indoor SS-1.25 already lists Ø0.3 and Ø0.6 m among standard diameters. SS-2 / SS-2.5 extend through Ø2.5–4 m. Outdoor jobs use P2.5–P5 up to about Ø6 m. Pick pitch from viewing distance, then lock diameter on the drawing.

Solution

Mooncell mapping for the built diameter, front service, optional GOB when the public can touch the surface. Indoor catalog brightness 1,000 nits · refresh 3,840 Hz · iron frame.

Engineer Note

Do not treat a small aging-rack ball as the only available size. If your brief is Ø1.5 m or Ø3 m, we quote that catalog diameter — the module set and steel change with the sphere, not a scaled photo.

FAQ

Common Questions from Integrators

A spherical LED display is a curved LED screen built as a full globe, hemisphere, or dome, so the picture reads from more than one direction. It is not a flat circular disc and not a hollow ring. DOIT VISION engineers the steel frame, the module set, and the pixel map to the diameter you specify. It is a project-built product, not a stock cabinet size you pick from a list.
Indoor catalog models are SS-1.25, SS-1.5, SS-1.875, SS-2, and SS-2.5 (P1.25 / P1.5 / P1.875 / P2 / P2.5). Standard diameters depend on pitch — for example SS-1.25 covers Ø0.3–2.0 m; SS-2.5 covers Ø0.4–4.0 m. Overall indoor range is about Ø0.3–5 m (larger on request). Outdoor models use P2.5 / P3 / P4 / P5 with standard diameters about Ø1–6 m. Refresh is 3,840 Hz on the indoor catalog; control is Mooncell. Send diameter, indoor or outdoor, and closest viewing distance for a drawing-backed pitch.
LED spheres use Mooncell only. They do not use Novastar, Colorlight, or Brompton. Those systems are used on other DOIT VISION lines, but spherical geometry needs Mooncell mapping. We ship the calibration file for your exact diameter so the image closes at the seam. Do not specify a Novastar processor on a sphere bid unless we have confirmed an exception in writing — we have not.
Indoor fine-pitch spheres use IP3X / IP31 on the catalog sheet. Outdoor models are specified IP65 front and back and typically start at P2.5, with P3 / P4 / P5 also available. Standard outdoor diameters run about Ø1–6 m; custom sizes are quoted. We do not publish an IP68 rating for this series. Tell us the site (lobby, plaza, or facade) so we lock enclosure and brightness on the drawing. Company certifications remain CE, FCC, RoHS, and ISO 9001.
A flat video stretched over a sphere warps logos and breaks at the poles and the seam. Content needs a spherical map matched to diameter and pixel pitch. DOIT VISION supplies the mapping file for the built sphere so Mooncell plays a continuous image. Plan artwork against that map, not a 16:9 timeline. We can review a test frame before you lock the content schedule.
Standard mounts are hanging or a floor stand, both front-service. A hang needs a rated suspension point and a defined cable path. A floor stand needs a level base and room to pull a module. Access is from the outside. Send ceiling height, point load, and service clearance with the inquiry so the frame drawing matches the site. Custom lead time is 4–6 weeks after CAD approval.
MOQ is 1 sphere. Warranty is 2 years. Custom spheres are scheduled at 4–6 weeks after CAD approval — not the 15–25 day window used for standard flat cabinets. Pricing is EXW Shenzhen and depends on diameter, pitch, indoor or outdoor, and mount. We do not publish a unit price here because those variables change the bill of materials on every job.
No. UL / ETL listing on DOIT VISION products is limited to Matrix, Brick, Square 1000, and COB Pro. Sphere is not on that list. Other series can be listed through an accredited lab, typically 8–10 weeks, if a US project requires it. CE, FCC, RoHS, and ISO 9001 apply company-wide. Ask before bid day if the spec calls for UL / ETL — we will say whether listing must be scheduled.
A sphere uses many custom-shaped modules, a diameter-specific steel frame, and a spherical pixel map — not stock rectangular cabinets. Yield on curved seams is lower than on flat walls. Optional GOB adds protection because guests touch glowing spheres. The price tracks that BOM, not a premium for the word "creative." Send diameter and pitch and we show the line items on the quote.
Usually no. Above about Ø2 m the sphere must ship as a modular kit and be reassembled on site. That restack is where modules get damaged and where untrained crews struggle — a common reason large-ball projects stall. We recommend Ø1.0 / 1.5 / 1.8 m when the brief allows. Larger diameters remain available with an engineered reassembly plan and support.
Hemisphere–Outward faces the room with a convex display — a luminous half-globe people see from outside. Hemisphere–Inward faces the viewer with a concave portal — guests look into the bowl. They need different frames, module sets, and service paths. Do not bid one as the other with the bottom omitted.
Yes. A flat MP4 stretched onto a sphere warps at the poles and breaks at the seam. Content must follow the spherical map matched to diameter and pitch. We ship the Mooncell mapping file with the build so playback closes correctly. Plan artwork against that map — not a 16:9 timeline. Sync or async modes are both available; we can review a test frame before you lock the show.
GOB is optional, not stock on every sphere. Order it when the public can reach the surface — lobbies, museums, and retail floors. Glue-on-board resin reduces damage from touch, dust, and light impact. Specify GOB at quotation; it is harder to add after modules are built. Barriers help, but guests still lean in.
