The current goes through the LED first and then to the negative side of the IC. This lowers the forward voltage drop and reduces the on-resistance. It helps reduce the heat generated by the display, uses less power and responds efficiently, making it an ideal way to save energy.

What are the differences between common cathode and common anode LED display driver architectures?

The way they are driven: Common-cathode means that the current first goes through the LED to the negative side of the IC. This reduces the forward voltage drop and on-resistance. Common anode means the current goes from the PCB to the LED, powering the chip directly and increasing the forward voltage drop.

The voltage required to power the LED: Common cathode requires around 2.8V for red chips and around 3.8V for blue and green chips.
