Double-sided ring LED displays illuminate both faces of the band on a shared ring chassis — each face runs independent content. Single-sided rings have LEDs on one face only. The choice affects weight, rigging load, power distribution, cost, and content workflow. This guide compares both configurations for AV integrators specifying ceiling-suspended halos and wall-mounted retail rings. Part of our Ring LED Buying Guide cluster.
- Double-sided rings add roughly 60–80% weight over single-sided at the same outer diameter — rigging must be sized accordingly.
- Each face on a double-sided ring has its own receiving card — two independent content channels on one physical structure.
- Single-sided is correct for wall-mounted retail windows and stage backdrops viewed from one direction only.
- Double-sided is standard for ceiling-suspended mall atriums where viewers on upper and lower floors both need visibility.
- Do not specify double-sided unless viewers genuinely approach from both directions — you pay for a second screen nobody sees.
How Double-Sided Rings Are Built
A single-sided ring mounts LED modules on one face of the aluminium ring band chassis. Viewers see pixels from that direction; the rear face is structural — mounting brackets, cable routing, and receiving cards accessible for service.
A double-sided ring mounts independent module faces on both sides of the band on a shared ring chassis. The band thickness increases to accommodate two module stacks back-to-back. Each face connects to its own receiving card — the top face and bottom face (or front and rear, depending on orientation) operate as two separate LED surfaces sharing one structural ring.
This is not two rings stacked — it is one ring with two pixel faces. Structural rigging attaches to the shared chassis; both faces hang as a single unit from the ceiling cables.
Weight and Rigging Impact
Weight is the primary engineering consequence of double-sided specification. At the same outer diameter and band width, double-sided adds roughly 60–80% over single-sided — approximately double the module count on the band, plus additional chassis reinforcement.
| Outer Ø | Config | Indicative Weight | Cable Count (min.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.0m P2.5 framed | Single-sided | ~45–65 kg | 4 |
| 2.0m P2.5 framed | Double-sided | ~75–110 kg | 6–8 |
| 3.0m P2.5 framed | Double-sided | ~120–180 kg | 8 |
Ceiling rigging uses steel cables rated to 3× display weight minimum. A 3m double-sided ring at 150kg requires cables rated to 450kg+ breaking load — typically 4–8 cables at 500kg MBL each, anchored to concrete slab or steel truss through a load-spreading plate.
Provide ceiling structure type (concrete slab, steel truss, suspended ceiling grid) at quote stage. Suspended ceiling grids cannot support double-sided rings without transfer to primary structure — this is a common site discovery that delays installation.

Power and Data Distribution
Double-sided rings require separate power and data paths for each face — two receiving card chains, two content inputs (or one processor outputting to both faces with independent zones).
- Single-sided: One receiving card chain around the band circumference. One HDMI/network input. Power calculated for one module face.
- Double-sided: Two receiving card chains — one per face. Two content inputs or dual-output processor configuration. Power draw roughly doubles vs single-sided at same diameter.
For Novastar controllers: specify whether both faces play identical content (mirrored) or independent content. Independent playback requires separate processor zones or a multi-output H-series controller. Multi-ring concentric arrays add further complexity — each ring may need independent or synchronized playback via Novastar H-series with genlock.
Cable routing on double-sided rings: power and data enter from the top hub (ceiling suspension point) and split to both faces through the ring chassis. Confirm cable length from ceiling entry to display before ordering — long atrium drops may require fiber conversion.
Content Workflow
Ring content is mapped to a band-shaped canvas — not a rectangle. Content designers need the exact band dimensions (outer circumference × band width in pixels) before producing assets.
- → One band canvas — logo animation, gradient sweep, text around circumference
- → Wall-mounted retail: content faces street / interior only
- → Stage ring: content faces audience; rear is structural
- → Two band canvases — same dimensions, independent or mirrored
- → Mall atrium: ground-floor branding on bottom face, upper-gallery messaging on top face
- → Casino ceiling: synchronized animation on both faces for 360° visual continuity when viewed from below
Frameless borderless rings require Novastar circular pixel mapping with pre-configured RCFG files — each fan-shaped sector maps to a position on the band canvas. Request RCFG files with your order for both faces on double-sided frameless builds.
Cost Comparison
Double-sided adds roughly 60–80% to hardware cost over single-sided — not a clean 2× because the shared chassis and single rigging structure offset some duplication. Processor and installation labour also increase.
| 2m P2.5 Framed Ring | EXW Shenzhen (USD) |
|---|---|
| Single-sided | $5,000–$8,000 |
| Double-sided | $8,500–$14,000 |
Installation labour for double-sided ceiling suspension: 4–6 hours vs 3–5 hours single-sided — heavier unit, more cable attachment points, dual power/data verification on both faces before lift.
Decision Framework
| Scenario | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Wall-mounted retail window ring | Single-sided — viewers from one direction |
| Stage backdrop ring above performers | Single-sided — audience faces one direction |
| Mall atrium ceiling halo | Double-sided — viewers on all floors |
| Hotel lobby pendant ring | Double-sided — reception + mezzanine visibility |
| DJ booth halo (ceiling above booth) | Single-sided — dance floor views up; ceiling above is dark |
| Exhibition floor stand ring | Single-sided — one viewing direction in aisle |
