LED video walls offer stunning clarity for advertising, entertainment, and professional settings. Do you know what is the difference between 2K, 4K, and 8K LED video walls, and which is best for your needs? Today, Doitvision will guide you how to calculate size, and estimate costs for different setups.

What is a 2K LED Video Wall?

A 2K LED video wall, also known as Full HD (FHD), has a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, totaling approximately 2.07 million pixels. This resolution provides sharp, vibrant visuals suitable for smaller indoor settings like retail stores, meeting rooms, or control centers. With a 16:9 aspect ratio, 2K walls is suitable for displaying high-definition content, such as presentations or advertisements, viewed from moderate distances. Due to their affordability and decent clarity, it is a popular choice for businesses seeking impactful displays without the higher costs of advanced resolutions.

What is a 4K LED Video Wall?

A 4K LED video wall, often referred to as Ultra HD (UHD), has a resolution of 3840×2160 pixels, around 8 million pixels. It is four times that of 2K. Typically, 4K walls use a pixel pitch of around P1.25 for optimal clarity at short distances. These HD display is ideal for large venues like auditoriums, exhibition halls, or broadcast studios.

What is an 8K LED Video Wall?

An 8K LED video wall, known as QUHD, has an impressive resolution of 7680×4320 pixels, containing roughly 33 million pixels. It is four times that of 4K and sixteen times that of 2K. This ultra-high resolution creates stunningly realistic visuals with rich depth and natural 3D effects. Therefore, it is perfect for premium applications like TV studios, cinemas, or large-scale exhibitions. With normal eyesight, 8K offers 4.3 times clearer visuals than 2K, but it requires very fine pixel pitches (e.g., P0.9 or smaller) and substantial data storage, such as 4TB for a 20-minute video.

LED Video Wall Display Technologies

2K vs. 4K vs. 8K LED Video Walls: Cost & Chocice Solution 1

SMD Technology

SMD technology is a widely used method for LED video walls. It involves mounting individual LED chips onto a circuit board to form pixels. SMD displays offer good brightness and color accuracy, supporting pixel pitches from P1.3 to P10.

However, they have more soldering points, increasing failure risks, and are less durable against dust or impact. All in all, SMD is cost-effective for larger pixel pitches (e.g., P2.5 or higher).

GOB Technology

GOB technology enhances SMD by applying a protective epoxy layer over the LED surface. Therefore, GOB displays can improve resistant to dust, water, and minor impacts. In addition, GOB maintains similar brightness and color performance as SMD but offers better reliability for indoor and semi-outdoor applications.

With pixel pitches typically ranging from P1.5 to P3.9, GOB is a middle-ground option, balancing cost and robustness. So, it is ideal for high-traffic environments like retail or event spaces.

COB Technology

COB technology represents the cutting edge of LED displays. Multiple LED chips are integrated directly onto a substrate, reducing soldering points and enabling ultra-fine pixel pitches , such as P0.4 to P1.56. COB offers superior resolution, higher contrast ratios ,up to 10,000:1, and excellent heat dissipation, extending lifespan to over 8 years. Doitvision COB LED display can provide seamless, non-reflective surface, vibrant, uniform visuals performance. Thefore, It is perfect for 4K and 8K displays in premium settings like conference rooms or studios. However, COB is more expensive than SMD or GOB.

Which Pixel Pitch is Best for 2K, 4K, or 8K?

For a COB panel size of 600×337.5mm, let’s evaluate pitches like P0.6, P0.78, P0.9, P1.2, P1.5, and P1.8.

  • 2K (1920×1080 pixels): As 2K requires fewer pixels, A P1.5 or P1.8 pitch is often sufficient . These display can balance cost and clarity for viewing distances of 5-10 feet.
  • 4K (3840×2160 pixels): P0.9 or P1.2 provids high pixel density for sharp images at 3-6 feet close distances. However, P1.5 display works for slightly farther viewing but compromises detail.
  • 8K (7680×4320 pixels): P0.6 or P0.78 is necessary to achieve the ultra-high pixel density required for 8K. It can offer clarity even at 2-4 feet very close viewing distances.

Area and Panel Quantity Calculations

To calculate the area and number of panels needed, we use the 600×337.5mm panel size . Each panel’s pixel count depends on the pitch.

2K LED Wall

  • Resolution: 1920×1080 pixels
  • Pixel pitch: P1.5 (1.5mm)
  • Pixels per panel: 600mm ÷ 1.5mm = 400 pixels (width); 337.5mm ÷ 1.5mm = 225 pixels (height)
  • Panels needed: Width = 1920 ÷ 400 = 4.8 (round up to 5); Height = 1080 ÷ 225 = 4.8 (round up to 5)
  • Total panels: 5×5 = 25 panels
  • Total area: 25 x (0.6m x 0.3375m) = 25 x 0.2025m² = 5.0625m²

4K LED Wall

  • Resolution: 3840×2160 pixels
  • Pixel pitch: P0.9 (0.9mm)
  • Pixels per panel: 600mm ÷ 0.9mm = 666.67 pixels (width); 337.5mm ÷ 0.9mm = 375 pixels (height)
  • Panels needed: Width = 3840 ÷ 666.67 = 5.76 (round up to 6); Height = 2160 ÷ 375 = 5.76 (round up to 6)
  • Total panels: 6×6 = 36 panels
  • Total area: 36 x 0.2025m² = 7.29m²

8K LED Wall

  • Resolution: 7680×4320 pixels
  • Pixel pitch: P0.6 (0.6mm)
  • Pixels per panel: 600mm ÷ 0.6mm = 1000 pixels (width); 337.5mm ÷ 0.6mm = 562.5 pixels (height)
  • Panels needed: Width = 7680 ÷ 1000 = 7.68 (round up to 8); Height = 4320 ÷ 562.5 = 7.68 (round up to 8)
  • Total panels: 8×8 = 64 panels
  • Total area: 64 x 0.2025m² = 12.96m²

2K, 4K, and 8K LED Walls Cost Estimation

LED Wall Costs vary based on pixel pitch, area, and technology. for 4K and 8K display, we recommend use COB technology. While it is higher price but offers superior performance. Average COB LED panel costs range from $1,500 to $5,000 per square meter. Additional components include mounting structures, power supplies, video processors (e.g., Novastar 4K processor at ~$4,000), and control software.

2K LED Wall

  • Pixel pitch: P1.5 COB
  • Area: 5.0625m²
  • Cost per m²: ~$2,500 ,mid-range for P1.5 COB
  • Panel cost: 5.0625m² x $2,500 = $12,656.25
  • Additional components: ~$6,000
  • Like mounting, processor, cables, software
  • Total estimated cost: ~$18,656.25

4K LED Wall

Pixel pitch: P0.9 COB

  • Area: 7.29m²
  • Cost per m²: ~$4,000 ,higher for finer pitch
  • Panel cost: 7.29m² x $4,000 = $29,160
  • Additional components: ~$8,000
  • Total estimated cost: ~$37,160

8K LED Wall

  • Pixel pitch: P0.6 COB
  • Area: 12.96m²
  • Cost per m²: ~$5,000 (premium for ultra-fine pitch)
  • Panel cost: 12.96m² x $5,000 = $64,800
  • Additional components: ~$10,000
  • Total estimated cost: ~$74,800

These estimates assume using optimal performance COB technology . if you are using SMD or GOB, you could reduce costs for 2K or 4K, but may compromise quality for 8K. Installation, customization.
