With the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), high-performance computing (HPC), and ultra-high-definition display technologies, the LED display industry is entering an unprecedented period of transformation.

As a crucial medium for information presentation and interaction, LED display technology has continually advanced in image quality, size, and energy efficiency. However, traditional electrical signal connections at the core architecture level are increasingly exposing bottlenecks, particularly in terms of data transmission speed and energy consumption.

At the 2025 International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), industry leaders extensively discussed the potential of optical signal communication (Optical Interconnect) in LED display chip interconnections, signaling a new wave of growth opportunities, especially in AI and HPC applications.

Limitations of Traditional Electrical Interconnects in LED Displays

Currently, the control systems of LED displays primarily rely on electrical signal connections for data transmission between chips and chipsets. While this approach is mature and cost-effective, its limitations are becoming increasingly apparent in high-speed, data-intensive environments:

Bandwidth Bottleneck: Electrical signals are prone to attenuation and crosstalk at high frequencies, limiting achievable data rates.

Increased Power Consumption: Maintaining signal integrity at high speeds often requires higher drive currents and complex compensation circuits, driving up power consumption.

System Complexity: High-frequency PCB routing becomes more complicated, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues worsen, increasing design difficulty.

Latency Issues: In AI inference, real-time image processing, and other latency-sensitive applications, electrical transmission delays have become significant performance bottlenecks.

As AI inference speeds escalate and demand for 8K/16K ultra-high-definition displays surges, traditional electrical transmission systems are increasingly inadequate for meeting LED displays’ needs for higher bandwidth and lower latency.

The Potential of Optical Communication in LED Displays

Optical signal communication, which uses photons instead of electrons to transfer information, offers ultra-high bandwidth, extremely low latency, and reduced energy consumption. Applying optical communication to LED displays could bring transformative benefits:

Higher Data Exchange Speeds: Optical signals can easily achieve terabit-level bandwidth, far exceeding traditional copper interconnects.

Reduced Power Consumption and Heat: Photonic transmission produces minimal resistive heating, helping manage the overall energy consumption of large-scale displays.

Enhanced Immunity to Interference: Optical signals are immune to electromagnetic interference, ideal for complex, high-density LED arrays.

Simplified System Design: Optical interconnects can reduce the need for complicated PCB layouts, improving system reliability.

Practically, optical communication could be integrated at multiple levels within LED displays—from internal module connections to chip-to-chip communication and across distributed display networks—creating low-latency, high-bandwidth collaborative systems. These are particularly suitable for multi-screen collaboration, AI real-time image analysis, and large-scale intelligent display terminals.

LED display applications

Empowering AI and High-Performance Computing

In AI and high-performance computing, data transmission speed directly determines overall system performance. AI model inference, training, and ultra-high-definition content generation demand extremely high parallelism and real-time data exchange.

Accelerating AI Inference: In multi-chip AI inference architectures, optical communication can dramatically reduce inter-node transmission latency, boosting overall processing efficiency.

Real-Time Large-Scale Display Systems: Smart city control centers and massive visualization systems require seamless synchronization of ultra-high-definition video streams, which optical communication can support with near-zero latency.

HPC Cluster Visualization: In high-performance computing centers, during tasks such as simulation and rendering, LED displays serve as interactive terminals, and optical communication can facilitate efficient linkage between computing nodes and displays.

By deeply integrating with AI and HPC systems, LED displays will no longer merely be output devices but will evolve into intelligent interaction hubs, with optical communication serving as the vital connecting technology.

LED display applications

Technical Challenges and Future Outlook

Despite the enormous potential, the large-scale application of optical communication in the LED display sector faces several technical challenges:

Integration and Packaging Difficulty: Efficiently integrating miniature optical communication modules with LED chips and control chips remains a critical technical hurdle.

Cost Concerns: Currently, high-speed optical components remain relatively expensive, requiring supply chain optimization and mass production to lower costs.

Lack of Standardization: The LED display industry lacks unified optical communication interface standards, which need to be developed for broader adoption.

Reliability Testing: After large-scale deployment, the durability and stability of optical communication systems still require extensive long-term verification.

LED display applications

Globally, multiple research institutions and enterprises have begun investing resources into tackling these challenges. At ISSCC 2025, several major semiconductor companies showcased prototype solutions for optical interconnects tailored to the display industry. It is anticipated that within the next three to five years, as the technology matures and costs decline, optical signal communication will first be commercialized in high-end LED displays and gradually penetrate mainstream markets.

In an era defined by the explosive growth of AI and high-performance computing, the LED display industry is undergoing a profound technological transformation. Optical signal communication is breaking through the performance bottlenecks imposed by traditional electrical transmission, enabling faster, more energy-efficient, and more intelligent display systems.

Looking ahead, as optical communication technologies continue to mature and their applications deepen, LED displays will evolve from mere visualization tools into integral components of intelligent systems, ushering in a new era of growth and innovation.
