As the aviation industry shifts toward digital training and precision verification, the need for immersive visual environments has evolved from simple visibility to true perceptual realism. Traditional flat display systems face three major limitations:

  • Insufficient field of view, causing loss of critical low-altitude visual cues such as runway edges and obstacles;
  • High signal latency, resulting in input-to-display delay during high-dynamic maneuvers such as dives or aerial combat;
  • Visible bezel gaps, breaking scene continuity and reducing immersion.

Doitvision build a customized 5-surface XR curved LED immersive display system. It is designed to reproduce the full external flight environment. It can achieve near 1:1 visual replication of real flight conditions.

The system must address three technical challenges:

  • Geometric correction for curved LED surfaces, seamless perspective alignment across all five screens;
  • Multi-display frame synchronization;
  • using hardware synchronization and low-latency transmission to eliminate tearing and stutter;
  • Long-term operational stability;
  • supporting continuous operation over 12 hours per day through optimized thermal management and redundant design.

Project Core Constraints and Requirements

Customized 5-Surface XR Curved LED Immersive Display System:Aviation Academy Virtual Visualization Customization 1

Deep Hardware-Software Compatibility

The system must be 100% compatible with the core features of UE5 flight visual software. It focus on adaptation to Nanite Virtualized Geometry and Lumen Global Illumination technologies.

Nanite’s micropolygon rendering enables real-time rendering of aircraft models with tens of millions of polygons, requiring the hardware layer to support high-frame-rate output at single-channel ≥4K resolution.

Lumen’s dynamic lighting calculations require the display system to possess 18-bit grayscale output capability, ensuring smooth transitions of light and shadow effects such as cloud shadows and dusk halos.

To achieve this, a “hardware twin test platform” must be established in advance. Its screen dimensions (7.5m × 3.83m × 4.25m), pixel density (1.5mm pixel pitch), and signal pathway (DP1.2 + fiber optic transmission) must be identical to the final installation environment.

This platform will be used for UE5 multi-channel image fusion debugging, including edge feathering parameter calibration, color calibration curve matching, and FOV coordinate mapping.

The cumulative debugging duration must not be less than 200 hours to avoid software re-adaptation due to hardware discrepancies.

Full-Process Implementation

Customized 5-Surface XR Curved LED Immersive Display System:Aviation Academy Virtual Visualization Customization 2

Requirements:

The project implementation timeline is strictly controlled at 180 days, progressing through five key phases sequentially. Among these, the “2-Month Stable Operation Test” is the core quality control node. It must satisfy continuous fault-free operation for ≥4320 hours (24 hours/day × 60 days), with key performance indicators consistently meeting standards:

Frame drop rate ≤0.1%, brightness decay rate ≤3%,

  • System latency fluctuation ≤10ms.
  • The test must simulate extreme operating conditions, including high-temperature environments (internal screen temperature 45°C), voltage fluctuations (±10% of rated voltage),
  • Signal interference (simulated airport radar signals), comprehensively verifying the system’s environmental adaptability.

Performance and Safety Requirements:

System performance must meet the real-time demands of flight simulation.

  • The overall visual latency across the entire chain must be ≤120ms,
  • Comprising signal transmission delay ≤20ms,
  • Processing delay ≤50ms,
  • Display response delay ≤50ms.
  • System startup time must be <45 seconds, Supporting one-click startup and emergency shutdown functions.

Overall Design Philosophy and Innovations

Spatial Immersion and Structural Integration Design:

Dual Ceiling-Floor Embedding + Seamless Splicing Structure:

The cabinet assembly extends fully to the ceiling. The upper screen section is rigidly connected to pre-embedded steel plates in the ceiling via “L-shaped corner brackets + expansion bolts,” achieving a flush embedment with the ceiling plane (gap ≤2mm).

The bottom screen section is embedded 30cm into the floor, surfaced with 12mm thick tempered laminated anti-slip glass, flush with the floor. This design eliminates the “bezel-induced fragmentation” of traditional displays.

It allowes visuals to extend seamlessly from floor to ceiling, achieving a fully enveloping FOV of ≥207° horizontally and ≥55° vertically, matching pilots’ natural visual range.

Integrated Light Absorption and Noise Reduction Design:

 The cabinet shell is constructed from 3mm thick Q235 cold-rolled steel plate, surface-coated with matte, environmentally friendly light-absorbing paint capable of absorbing over 95% of ambient stray light , preventing glare on visual content.

The cabinet interior is filled with 50mm thick flame-retardant sound-absorbing cotton (Noise Reduction Coefficient ≥0.8), combined with silent fans (noise ≤45dB) in equipment racks, ensuring total system operational noise ≤50dB, meeting office environment noise standards and preventing audio interference from affecting training focus.

Maintenance and Safety Redundancy Design:

Human-Centric Safe Maintenance Space:

The cabinet interior bottom provides a standardized 4.83m × 2.85m maintenance space, designed with “functional zoning”—a 3.63m × 2.25m cockpit installation area (compatible with mainstream flight simulator cockpit dimensions like Boeing 737, Airbus A320).

It surrounded by a 0.6m-wide access corridor. The corridor floor is covered with 2mm thick insulating, anti-slip PVC flooring. Walls are equipped with AC220V emergency lighting and emergency call buttons, and fire extinguishers are placed in corners, comprehensively ensuring maintenance personnel safety.

Triple-Redundancy Assurance System:

  • The power supply system employs “UPS + Dual-Circuit Mains” redundancy, with automatic switchover to UPS upon main circuit failure, sustaining system operation for ≥30 minutes to ensure complete training data preservation.
  • Signal transmission uses “Ethernet + Fiber Optic” dual backup, automatically switching to fiber optic transmission within ≤100ms upon primary Ethernet cable failure.
  • The cooling system is configured with primary and secondary fans; the backup fan activates immediately upon primary fan failure.
  • Simultaneously, the air conditioning unit features automatic power reduction under high temperatures to prevent equipment overheating and shutdown.
