Flexible LED modules are soft and pliable — they rely on a supporting substructure to hold the desired shape. Here are the four proven installation methods used by AV integrators worldwide, plus tools, wiring, calibration, and troubleshooting. Based on real installations shipped to 55+ countries.
>
- Flexible LED modules support 4 distinct installation methods: Magnetic (the gold standard), Steel Frame, Hanging/Suspended, and Embedded — each suited to different shapes, budgets, and maintenance access requirements
- The magnetic snap-on system uses up to 28 neodymium magnets per module — no screws, no tools, instant attachment to any steel surface. Magnets are height-adjustable by rotation to compensate for uneven surfaces
- Front maintenance with a suction cup tool means you never need to build access space behind a curved wall — pull a failed module from the front in under 30 seconds
- Signal and power cables must be separated by at least 50mm to prevent electromagnetic interference causing random pixel flickering
Tools & Preparation — What You Need Before Opening a Single Crate
Before mounting a single module, verify that the structural wall or mounting surface can support the full display weight. A flexible LED display with its steel frame weighs approximately 18–22 kg/m² for indoor installations. If mounting onto drywall or a stud wall, install reinforcement backing before the frame arrives.
| Tool | Purpose | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Laser level | Align frame mounting brackets to ±2mm | Spirit level not precise enough for curved frames |
| Impact driver + socket set | Bolt frame sections and anchor to wall | M8–M12 bolts depending on frame size |
| Torque wrench | Tighten bolts to 25–30 Nm specification | Overtightening deforms the curve radius |
| Multimeter | Verify voltage at each PSU before connecting modules | Test every PSU — do not assume all are live |
| Rubber mallet | Tap modules flush if magnetic mount does not seat | Light tap only — never hit the LED face directly |
| Suction cup tool | Front-access module removal during installation and maintenance | Included with every DOIT VISION flexible LED order |
| Laptop + control software | Load config file and run test pattern | Novastar LCT / Colorlight LEDVision / Linsn LED Studio / Brompton Tessera software |
| Anti-static mat / wrist strap | Prevent ESD damage to LED modules during handling | Mandatory for fine-pitch P0.9 and P1.2 modules |
Method 1: Magnetic Suction — The Gold Standard
This is the most popular installation method for flexible LED modules. It allows the screen to follow complex curves while remaining extremely easy to maintain. No screws, no bolts, no special installation tools required.
- Up to 28 neodymium magnets pre-installed on the back of each flexible module
- Modules “snap” onto a custom-curved steel frame or flat sheet-metal surface
- Magnets instantly conform to the curvature of the structure
- Alignment pins built into the module edges ensure pixel-to-pixel registration between adjacent modules
- Magnets can be rotated to adjust height
- Compensates for uneven installation structures
- Ensures a flat and continuous display face after installation
- Each magnet individually adjustable — no shimming required
- Front maintenance: Pull a single module from the front with the suction cup tool — no rear access needed
- Complex shapes: “S” curves, circles, waves — magnets conform to any steel surface
- No tools: Snap on by hand, remove with suction cup
- Fast: A two-person team installs 10m² in one working day
- Corporate lobbies with curved walls
- Retail column wraps
- Curved studio backdrops and broadcast sets
- Any installation where rear access is difficult or impossible
Start at the vertical centre line of the frame. Mount the centre column of modules top-to-bottom. Then work outward one column at a time — alternately left and right — to keep the curve symmetric and avoid cumulative alignment error. Verify pixel alignment across module boundaries after every 3 columns.
Method 2: Steel Frame / Bracket Installation
For large-scale or permanent architectural installations, a custom-welded steel skeleton is built first. The frame is engineered to the exact radius of the curve needed. Flexible modules are then attached to this frame using either the magnetic system or screw-in mounting brackets.
- Custom-welded steel frame
- Engineered to exact curve radius
- Modules attached via magnets or brackets
- ±5mm radius tolerance across full span
- Extremely stable and durable
- Suitable for displays over 10m²
- Handles outdoor wind loads
- Long-term permanent installation
- Massive curved outdoor billboards
- Architectural “ribbon” displays on building facades
- Permanent lobby installations over 20m²
When sourcing a steel frame from a local fabricator, the radius tolerance is the critical specification. Most local fabricators working from a verbal description of “curved” cannot achieve ±5mm. Provide a CAD drawing with the exact radius — DOIT VISION includes this with every order.
Method 3: Hanging / Suspended Installation
Used in temporary events or spaces with high ceilings where floor space is at a premium. Creates a striking “floating” display effect by suspending the screen from above.
- Display built into a flexible “curtain” or lightweight frame
- Suspended from ceiling truss or beam
- Uses steel aircraft cables
- Weight carefully distributed across anchor points
- Creates “floating” visual effect
- Can create 360° cylindrical screens
- No floor space consumed
- Dramatic visual impact
- Trade show booths and exhibitions
- Concerts and live events
- Shopping mall center-hang displays
- Sports arena center-court “halos”
Flexible LED modules weigh approximately 18–22 kg/m². A 20m² suspended display weighs 360–440 kg. Verify the ceiling structure can support the total weight before any installation work begins. Certified rigging equipment with appropriate safety factors is mandatory.
Method 4: Embedded / Mosaic Installation
This method treats the LED screen as part of the interior wall itself — like a “digital skin” on the architecture. A recessed pocket is cut into the wall, the support structure is installed inside, and the modules mount flush with the surrounding surface for a flush architectural finish.
- Recessed “pocket” cut into wall
- Support structure installed inside recess
- Modules mount flush with surrounding drywall or panelling
- Front-access only — suction cup tool required for maintenance
- High-end museum exhibits
- Luxury flagship stores
- Architectural feature walls
- Applications demanding the highest aesthetic appeal
Summary — Which Method for Your Project?
| Method | Maintenance Access | Complexity | Best Shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magnetic | Front (Easy) | Moderate | Waves, Pillars, Curves |
| Steel Frame | Rear (Standard) | High | Large Arc, Cylinder |
| Hanging | Front/Rear | Moderate | Circles, Floating Ribbons |
| Embedded | Front Only | High | Flush Curved Walls |
Signal & Power Wiring — Keep Them Separated by 50mm
Signal cables carry low-voltage differential data between the sending card and receiving cards on each module. Power cables carry mains voltage to the PSUs and DC power from PSUs to modules. If these two cable types run parallel and adjacent for more than 300mm, electromagnetic interference from the AC power line can corrupt the data signal. The symptom is random flickering pixels — intermittent and extremely difficult to diagnose.
- Minimum 50mm separation from AC power cables
- Use shielded Cat6 or Cat6a cable
- Maximum 100m from sending card to furthest receiving card
- Label both ends of every Cat6 cable with the sending card port number
- One 220V circuit per 20 modules (10A breaker)
- Use the supplied DC harness — do not extend
- Each PSU powers max 10 modules
- Ground every PSU to the structural frame
Wire routing sequence: install all power cables first and test each PSU output with a multimeter. Then install all signal cables. If a module does not power on during initial test, you know the issue is a loose DC connection or bad PSU — not a signal fault — and you isolate it in seconds.
Control System Setup & Calibration
DOIT VISION ships every flexible LED display with a pre-loaded configuration file on a USB drive. This file contains the pixel map, curve geometry correction, and colour calibration for your specific display. No manual pixel-by-pixel mapping is required on site.
-
Install the control softwareNovastar LCT, Colorlight LEDVision, Linsn LED Studio, or Brompton Tessera software. Download from the manufacturer’s website — do not reuse an old version.
-
Connect sending card to first receiving cardCat6 cable from Sending Card Port 1 → Receiving Card Input 1 on Module 1. Power on the control system rack first, then modules.
-
Load the configuration file from the USB driveFile → Open → Select the config file. The software detects all receiving cards and applies the pixel map automatically.
-
Run the test patternWhite screen → check colour uniformity and dead pixels. R → G → B cycle → check each channel. Grid pattern → check pixel alignment across module boundaries.
-
Adjust brightness50–60% for indoor (1,000 nits at 100% is too bright for a lobby). 70–80% for outdoor during daytime. Configure auto-brightness sensor if included.
Troubleshooting — The Five Symptoms We See Most Often
| Symptom | Most Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Entire module dark | Loose DC connector or tripped PSU | Check PSU output with multimeter. Reseat DC connector. |
| Horizontal line of dead pixels | Damaged or loose ribbon cable between modules | Reseat ribbon cable. Replace if line persists. |
| Random flickering pixels | EMI — signal and power cables too close (<50mm) | Separate signal and power cables. Reroute if overlapping. |
| Colour mismatch between modules | Configuration file not loaded or wrong batch file | Reload correct config file from shipment USB. |
| Content only on half the modules | Sending card port mapping incomplete | Open sending card config. Verify every output port has a screen section assigned. |
If none of the above resolves the issue, WhatsApp our engineering team directly. A photo of the affected area and your control software screen is usually enough for us to identify the problem within minutes.
Installation — Questions Installers Actually Ask
What are the different ways to install a flexible LED display?
DOIT VISION flexible LED modules support four installation methods: (1) Magnetic Suction — modules snap onto a steel frame with up to 28 neodymium magnets per module, front-access maintenance with suction tool, best for waves/pillars/curves; (2) Steel Frame/Bracket — custom-welded steel skeleton for large-scale permanent installations, best for large arcs and cylinders; (3) Hanging/Suspended — display suspended from ceiling truss with steel aircraft cables, best for circles and floating ribbons at events; (4) Embedded/Mosaic — recessed pocket in wall with flush mounting, best for high-end architectural applications. Full comparison table with maintenance access, complexity, and best shapes included in the article.
How does the magnetic mounting system work?
Each flexible LED module contains up to 28 neodymium magnets pre-installed on the back. The modules snap onto any steel surface and instantly conform to the curvature of a structure. No screws, bolts, or special tools required. The magnets are height-adjustable — they can be rotated to compensate for uneven installation surfaces and ensure a flush, evenly aligned display face. Front maintenance uses a suction cup tool (included) to pull individual modules from the front — no rear access needed.
How long does it take to install a flexible LED display?
A two-person team can install a 10m² flexible LED curved wall using the magnetic method in one working day (6–8 hours). Larger installations of 30–50m² on steel frames typically take 3–4 days including frame assembly, module mounting, wiring, and calibration. Hanging installations add roughly 20% more time for rigging verification. Embedded installations add roughly 40% more time for wall pocket construction.
Do I need special tools to install flexible LED modules?
For the magnetic method, no — modules snap on by hand and come off with the included suction cup tool. You do need standard AV installation tools: laser level (spirit level not precise enough for curved frames), impact driver with socket set, torque wrench, multimeter, and a laptop with control software. Anti-static mat/wrist strap is mandatory for fine-pitch modules (P0.9, P1.2). DOIT VISION includes a printed installation manual, suction cup tool, and USB drive with configuration file in every shipment.
What is the most common installation mistake with flexible LED?
Running AC power cables parallel to Cat6 signal cables closer than 50mm, causing electromagnetic interference that produces random pixel flickering. Always separate signal and power cable paths. Second most common: overtightening frame bolts without a torque wrench, deforming the curve radius. Third: mounting modules from one edge instead of centre-out, creating cumulative alignment error across the curve.
Do flexible LED modules require rear access for maintenance?
No. Using the magnetic method with the suction cup tool, all maintenance is performed from the front. You pull a single failed module out from the front and snap a replacement into place in under 30 seconds. Steel frame installations typically require rear access. Hanging installations allow front or rear access depending on the rigging configuration. Embedded installations are front-only — the suction cup tool is your only access point.
Before you fabricate the frame, confirm the geometry is buildable with the column diameter feasibility chart. Module weights, power draw and mounting dimensions are on the Flexible LED Series product page.
